Cross-cultural awareness
In many different countries people create mandalas, special circle images, as part of making a kind of wish. This special wish is called an intention. The intention can be anything you want to express or achieve. Many times this intention takes the form of a prayer.
In Tibet, mandalas for peace are created in sand and the Navajo create similar paintings such as the medicine wheel. The circular
Aztec calendar was both a timekeeping device and religious expression. Hildegard von Bingen, a Christian nun in the 12th century, created mandalas to express her beliefs and feelings. Mandalas can also be seen in architecture. Christian cathedrals house many beautiful rose windows. Next time you visit St John Church take some time to observe and reflect on the beauty of our rose
window.
